Does Amber Necklace Really Work? Medical Clarifies Doubts

Amber is a fossil resin found mainly in the Baltic Sea region and is being increasingly used for its medicinal properties when in contact with the skin.

Does Amber Necklace Really Work Medical clarifies doubts

The practice was already very common in Europe. But recently, when the Brazilian model Gisele Büdnchen put the amber necklace on her youngest daughter, the theme reverberated and many Brazilian mothers and fathers began to know the necklace and use it on their babies.

However, according to pediatrician Marcia Yamamura, there are no scientific studies conducted that prove their real effect and also no side effect. “The amber paste, because of its natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, is being widely used to alleviate the discomfort in the eruption of baby teeth . But when we talk about babies and everything that refers to them, we should always be very cautious, “says the doctor.

The Benefits of Amber Necklace

The main benefits would be provided by succinic acid, which is present in amber and is released when the resin comes into contact with the skin. Are they:

  • Strengthens the immune system;
  • It improves the nervous system;
  • It has anti-inflammatory properties;
  • Acts as a muscle relaxer.

Because of these advantages, many mothers and fathers opt for the use of the amber necklace in their children during the teething phase, believing that this way the baby will feel less of the common nuisances in this period. However, the Brazilian Association of Pediatric Dentistry does not recommend the use, especially because of the risk of suffocation.

Care of the amber necklace

One of the main concerns has to do with the risk of bottlenecks. According to pediatrician Marcia Yamamura, it is not recommended to use any type of collar or cord in babies. “The use of the amber necklace should always be monitored and fulltime, which in practice becomes impossible. The baby can accidentally tear or break, ingest the stones or even strangle if the cord gets stuck somewhere, “Marcia warns.

An alternative would be to use amber on bracelets and anklets. “But even so, the risk of the baby breaking the collar and putting the object to the mouth exists,” says the doctor.

If the baby actually goes to use, the professional lists some important tips:

  • Remove the collar to sleep;
  • Check constantly that the cord is in good condition, because if it is worn, the chance of breaking is greater;
  • Always check the catch, which must be threaded;
  • Be aware of any allergies that the collar may cause in the neck region;
  • If your baby feels uncomfortable while putting it on, remove it immediately. There are children and adults who do not support necklaces.

Attention at the time of purchase

The value of the necklace varies according to the type of amber: the more polished and cut, the more expensive. On average, it costs between $ 65 and $ 90.

It is also important to check the authenticity of the product as there are imitations of plastic, glass and other materials. One way of testing is by touching the product, since the amber is warm, while the imitations are usually colder than the skin.

If you have already purchased it, you can put a drop of alcohol or acetone and see if this causes any change. If it changes color or becomes sticky, it is not original.
