Canada is a North American country. Occupying most of the northern half of North America, it is the second largest country in the world, with an area of 9 984 670 km 2 . It extends for 4600 kilometers, from north to south, and for 5380 kilometers, from east to west. It is bordered by the Arctic Ocean, to the north; the Atlantic Ocean to the east; the USA to the south and the Pacific Ocean and the US state of Alaska to the west. (2004), Calgary (943 400 inhab.) (2004), Quebec (644 700 inhab.) (2004), Winnipeg (632 400 inhab.) (2004), Hamilton ( 646 100 inhab.) (2004) and London (347 000 inhab.) (2004).
Climate
Given the size of the country, Canada’s climate has many variations. It has a polar climate, in the northernmost region, which corresponds to a vegetal formation called tundra and that only develops in summer, when the soil thaws. South of the tundra, there is a continental climate, which corresponds to the boreal forest. In the west, Canada has a coastal strip of temperate oceanic climate. The interior has a temperate continental climate, with very cold winters and relatively short summers.
Economy
Canada is one of the largest economic powers in the world, especially in the field of exports of raw materials. Agriculture and mining contribute to the important place that the country occupies in the world market. In agricultural terms, Canada is a major producer and exporter of wheat, barley, corn, potatoes, oats and soy. Forestry provides huge volumes of wood for export and for industrial transformation. The fish richness of Canadian waters also contributes to the development of fisheries. As for mining and energy resources, Canada has huge reserves of oil, natural gas, copper, nickel, lead, zinc, iron and gold. Industry and construction account for a quarter of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The main industrial products are transport equipment, food products and beverages, chemicals, wood products, electrical equipment, metal products, rubber and plastic products, clothing, textiles, furniture, tobacco and leather goods. Canada’s main trading partners are the United States of America, Japan, the United Kingdom and Mexico.
