Member State of the United States of America. Located in the southeastern tip of the country, it occupies the peninsula of the same name and covers an area of 151 670 km 2. Florida was discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Léon, but, due to the hostility of the Indians, it was only later, in 1539, that it was occupied by Hernando Soto and Pánfilo de Narváez. Still in the 16th century, several battles overshadowed Florida’s history, for which the Spaniards erected and armed the fortress city of Santo Agostinho (San Agustín, the first permanent European settlement in the future USA), in order to expel the French who, meanwhile, had settled in the Northwest (Fort Caroline). With the expulsion of the French, the Franciscans and Spanish Jesuits tried, from this city, the infiltration to be able to convert the Indians. In 1680, the struggles with the English began, who were installed in the north of Florida, ending Spain, through the Treaty of Paris (1763), by giving the peninsula to England. The British colony of East Florida was born, and the British took the opportunity to capture the Spanish city of Saint Augustine. In 1783, the first North American attacks were rejected, but in 1818, after a new invasion, Spain officially ceded (1819) Florida to the USA, which acquired the territory. In 1845, it became a state of the USA.
