Hong Kong Banks

Hong Kong is a Chinese Special Administrative Region, located on the south coast of Kwangtung province. It includes the islands of Hong Kong, Stonecutters, the Kowloon peninsula and the New Territories (a group of other small islands). It covers a total area of 1092 km 2 and has a population of 7,191,503 inhabitants (2017). The most important city is Vitória.

During the Opium War (1840-1842), Hong Kong was occupied by the United Kingdom and in 1898 China handed over the territory to that country for a period of 99 years. As of this date, the new British colony became an important center of commerce.

In the process that led to the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1912, Hong Kong served as a political refuge for many of the opponents of the new regime. After 1912, Chinese nationalism became hostile towards external powers. Between 1925 and 1927 this regime prohibited the access of English boats to the ports of South China, a fact that seriously compromised Hong Kong's trade.

The Sino-Japanese war of the 1930s led China to seek support against Japan from European countries like England, which facilitated the hitherto difficult conditions of relationship between both countries. The Second World War, which broke out in September 1939, made the island's economic life even more difficult, but in 1945, following Japan's unconditional surrender, the British reoccupied the territory and resumed the strength of Asia's great commercial center. There was a strong industrialization based on textiles. Hong Kong has become the world's largest port of goods and its gross domestic product per capita is among the highest in the world. The territory is a commercial power and an extremely important financial center.
