Member State of the United States of America. Located between the Mississippi
and Missouri rivers, it covers an area of 145 791 km 2 and has a
population of 2 946 200 residents (2004). It borders the states of Minnesota
in the north, Wisconsin in the northeast, Illinois in the southeast, Missouri in
the south, Nebraska in the west and South Dakota in the northwest. Its capital
is Des Moines.
Serene Iowa presents itself with gently undulating fields and plains,
peppered with picturesque parks, lakes and recreation areas such as East
Okoboji, West Okoboji (Iowa's deepest natural lake), Spirit Lake and Clear Lake.
Iowa is located in the heart of the North American Corn Belt and is
sometimes referred to as the global capital of food production. The state was
named after the Iowa tribe and is nicknamed Hawkeye State in
honor of Chief Black Hawk. It is considered one of the safest states in
the United States.
The rich cultural heritage can be experienced, for example, in the
German-influenced Amana colonies with their many historical sites and
museums. The Pella tulips are of Dutch origin, and Des Moines, the capital of
Iowa, was apparently named by French immigrants.
In the Effigy Mounds National Monument on the Mississippi River in
the northeast of the state, rangers offer guided hikes to the artificial hill
structures called mounds several times a day during the summer half-year. AD and
1200 AD were laid out as burial and cult buildings. Of the total of 200 mounds,
31 are shaped like animals. The area is also very popular with ornithologists
because of its location on one of the most important bird migration routes in
North America.
Whether it was the abolition of slavery, the end of racial discrimination,
the equality of women or the marriage of homosexual couples - Iowa has always
been a pioneer in the granting of civil rights.
- According to acronymmonster, the nickname of Iowa is The Hawkeye State.

Vacation spots & excursions
Des Moines, on the river of the same name, has only been the
capital of Iowa since 1857. The mighty capitol with its gold dome is worth
seeing. The Art Center is dedicated to 19th and 20th century
American folk art. In and around Des Moines there are 58 parks with secluded
groves, beautiful gardens, colorful flower beds and picnic areas. The Saylorville
Lake is ideal for all water sports. The oldest of the three state
universities is located in the old capital, Iowa City. Popular
recreation areas are East and West Okoboji, Spirit
Lake and Clear Lake. The rich cultural heritage
is evident in the many museums and historical sites of the German, Swiss and
Alsatian Amana colonies. They were founded near Homestead in the
mid-19th century by members of a religious group that was persecuted in native
Europe. In Pella, the Dutch influence is reflected in the tulip
fields, the architecture and the customs. A ride on the Boone and Scenic
Valley Railway is an experience. A visit to Effigy Mounds Park with
relics of Indian culture or Fort Dodge, which has been restored as a
museum, is also interesting.
The Mississippi also serves as a popular holiday destination for tourists. Here
you can discover the famous »Riverboat Casinos« that lie along the river.
