Member State of the United States of America. Located in the center of the
Atlantic coast, it covers an area of 27 394 km 2 and has a
population of 5 604 000 residents (2004). It is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean
to the east and borders the states of Virginia to the south, West Virginia to
the southwest, and Pennsylvania to the north. The capital is the city of

the northwest.
Tourist attractions range from the 16 km long white sandy beaches of Ocean
City to the bustling port of Baltimore. The 6,400 km of Chesapeake Bay (the
largest estuary in the United States), including its tributaries, separates the
Eastern Shore from the rest of the state. The huge Chesapeake Bridge connects
both parts.
The United States Naval Academy is located in Annapolis, the capital of
Maryland. Chesapeake Bay, which is extremely popular with sailors, has a sailing
season almost all year round. The yachts of the famous Volvo Ocean Race make a
stopover in the port of Annapolis. Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, is
only 30 miles from the US capital, Washington, DC.

Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore in 1634 and was one of the 13 founding
states of the United States.
Vacation spots & excursions
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park stretches 295 km
from Washington DC to Cumberland in western Maryland, where the young George
Washington began his military career. The canal used to be an important trade
route. The mule tow path is now a popular hiking and cycling path. The large
holiday resort Ocean City attracts with an extensive white
sandy beach, a 5 km long waterfront, stalls and carousels, tram rides, boat
trips and opportunities for deep sea fishing and diving. Muddy Creek Falls is
located near Deep Creek Lake in Garrett County. The Carroll Country Farm
Museum is a 19th century farm still near Westminster. Services
are still held in the old Protestant Old Trinity Church in
Church Creek.
Annapolis
Annapolis, the state capital, has an attractive harbor, the
impressive US Navy Academy and beautiful contemporary architecture.
Baltimore
Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, is a busy port
city. The restored Inner Harbor district attracts numerous
tourists. Baltimore has a cosmopolitan population of over 2.5 million and yet an
appealing, village-like atmosphere.
The Constellation frigate, the U.S. Navy's first ship (1797) and the
world's oldest floating ship, is moored at Pier 1 on the Inner Harbor. The World
Trade Center, the National Aquarium and the Maryland
Science Center are also located in the 1.2 ha area and two
bank pavilions with shops and restaurants. Every year there is a street artist
festival in the open-air amphitheater. The star-shaped brick fort
McHenry National Monument is just a few minutes away by boat, and
its bombardment in 1814 triggered the composition of the national anthem The Star
Spangled Banner. Nearby is the Charles Center with 8.8
hectares of offices, skyscrapers, highways, fountains and plazas, including the Morris
Mechanic Theater. Also nearby is the Baltimore Arena and Festival Hall,
where ice hockey games, music concerts and other events take place. Among the
museums are the Baltimore Museum of Art(numerous post-impressionist
works), the Walters Art Gallery and the City Life Museum, a
block of buildings with buildings that represent city life in the 19th century,
are particularly worth seeing. Mount Vernon Place offers houses and
squares from the 19th century as well as many cultural institutions, such as B.
the Maryland Historical Society and the Peabody Conservatory of
Music. Here is also the Washington Monument, from which you have a
good panoramic view. The Fort McHenry National Monument hosts special
military parades and ceremonies in summer.
Frederick
Frederick is a city with pretty brick buildings and
parks. There is a lot to see in and around Frederick.
The Gambrill State Park is located west of the city and offers
an excellent panoramic view from the Catoctin Peaks. The Camp David
Presidential Retreat near Thurmont is the traditional holiday destination
for US president. The public has no access, but the landscape in the
surrounding Catoctin Mountain Park is just as beautiful. The Cunningham
Falls State Park is near.
Other Maryland attractions include Smith Island and Tangier Sound,
Home to the fishermen of Chesapeake Bay, which is known for its oysters, clams
and crabs.
