Massachusetts is versatile and historically interesting as a travel destination. Its attractions include pretty villages with cobblestones and green areas as well as the most modern technology centers.

It's worth walking the early pilgrim trails in this state on the east coast of the USA, visiting battleships and lighthouses, experiencing the thrilled atmosphere of a Boston Red Sox baseball game, or watching whales pass by. The season for trips to the whales, which can be found from 40 km off the coast, is from April to October.

Massachusetts is the gateway to New England and in 1620 was the arrival point for the Mayflower, a sailing ship with which the so-called Pilgrim Fathers came to America from England. In 2020 the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Mayflower will be celebrated. The Boston Tea Party, one of the triggers of the American Revolution, took place in Massachusetts in 1773. The state was also one of the 13 founding states of the United States.

The Berkshire Hills run through western Massachusetts. In the east, the state slopes down to the sea, where the capital Boston and the beaches of Cape Cod are located.

Vacation spots & excursions

Cambridge is across from Boston on the Charles River. Here is Harvard University, the oldest university in the USA (1636). South of Boston is Quincy, the birthplace of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Salem, north of Boston, is notorious for the witch trials of 1692. West of Boston is Concord, one of the most beautiful old cities in the United States. The Plimouth Plantation open air museum in Plymouth is a replica of a pilgrimage village from 1622. The nearby Edaville Railroad offers trips in an ancient steam train. In New Bedford, a restored whaling site is Seamen's Bethel, which was described in Herman Melville's well-known novel »Moby Dick«. Cape Cod offers approximately 400 km of beautiful beaches and 21 coastal towns and fishing villages. This area, like so many others, is a popular vacation region in the United States. In Provincetown, at the head of the Cape, the Pilgrims first set foot on American soil. Martha's Vineyard is a picture-perfect island off the coast of Cape Cod. The island airport in Edgartown is served by Boston and New York. Nantucket Island was once a whaling port and is now a popular destination for sun worshipers. Old Sturbridge Village in central Massachusetts is a living history museum depicting a village in New England around 1830. The Berkshire Hills and Mohawk Trail are just two hours from Boston. The legendary Indian Trail winds through 200,000 hectares of state park, forests and reserves. The autumnal splendor of the trees is particularly beautiful here. The New England Science Center in Worcester offers a zoo and many other attractions for the whole family.

Boston

Boston is a city of contrasts, a pleasant mix of old and new. The city looks quite English with its hilly, winding and cobblestone streets, a city park with a beautiful lawn and cozy Victorian houses with polished brass door knockers. Boston played a significant role in resisting British colonial rule, which eventually led to the American War of Independence. Henry James' novel The Bostonians vividly describes the character of this city. The Freedom Trail passes 16 historic sites, some of which are in Boston National Historical Park can be found. You can recognize the way by red signs on the sidewalk. The highest vantage point in New England is the 60-story John Hancock Observatory, from which you can see the city from a bird's eye view. Other tourist attractions include a harbor tour, where you can admire the Boston skyline, the airport and the USS Constitution from 1822 in the Charlestown fleet harbor. The Museum of Fine Arts, the famous Museum of Science, the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum and the Boston Tea Party Ship & Museum are arguably the most interesting museums in the city. The Faneuill Hall and the Old North Church are also worth seeing.

Across Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Whale Trail runs across Massachusetts. It connects Provincetown on Cape Cod in the east with Pittsfield in the west. The route takes in whaling landmarks such as Seaman's Bethel and Mariners' Home in New Bedford and past the New Bedford Whaling Museum, dedicated to childhood in the whaling era. The Center For Coastal Studies in Provincetown is also very informative for children, giving visitors insights into life in and by the ocean. A highlight on the route is the New England Aquarium in Boston.
