Member State of the United States of America. Located in the central part of the
North of the country, it covers an area of 217 736 km 2 and has a
population of 5,089,900 residents (2004). It borders the Canadian provinces of
Manitoba and Ontario to the north, and borders the states of Wisconsin to the
east, Iowa to the south, and South Dakota and North Dakota to the west. The
capital is the city of Saint Paul.
Minnesota, the second northernmost state in the United States after Alaska,
is one of the top places in the country in terms of outdoor tourism.
Minnesota has 68 nature reserves, 55 state forests and more than 12,000 lakes
and borders Canada, the upper states of the Midwest and the Upper Lake (Lake
Superior), the largest freshwater lake in the world.
The largest cities in Minnesota are Minneapolis and St. Paul, which are
located in the north of the state on the Mississippi River. They were originally
border towns that were populated by German, Irish and Scandinavian immigrants
and are now real melting pots. Minneapolis is cosmopolitan and modern, while St.
Paul is smaller and quieter. Both have a lot to offer culturally, as there are
most theaters outside of New York.
- According to acronymmonster, the nickname of Minnesota is The North Star State.

Attractions in Minnesota
Vacation spots & excursions
The twin cities are the gateway to the north of the state, which offers
inexhaustible hiking, sport and excursion opportunities with its wonderful lakes
and extensive forests. There are two popular ski areas in the Twin Cities area,
the Hyland Hills Ski Area and a little further away the Buckhill
Ski Area. A popular recreational area is Boundary Waters, which is
ideal for hiking, fishing, camping and canoeing.
The beautifully situated port city of Duluth (4 hours' drive
from the Twin Cities) at the western tip of Lake Superior is approached by ships
from all over the world via the St. Lawrence River. Sea and harbor tours are
ideal. Other attractions are the Canal Park Museum,
the Aerial Life Bridge and the Skyline Parkway Street high
above the city. The depot is a lovingly restored train station with
interesting exhibitions. It is part of a reconstructed village in the St.
Louis Country's Heritage & Arts Center. In autumn, when the leaves
change color, a trip to this green city is particularly attractive.
Spirit Mountain is a year-round vacation and outdoor
recreation center 11 km south of Duluth. The spectacular North Shore Drive (US
Highway 61) runs on the shores of Lake Superior from Duluth to the Canadian
border over a distance of 240 km. The North Woods- Area consists of
extensive wilderness and lakes. Brainerd, Bemidji, Detroit Lakes, Lake Mille
Lacs and Grand Rapids are some of the larger vacation areas. In
the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, about 43 km north of Two
Harbors, there is a lighthouse in beautiful natural surroundings. The Gooseberry Falls,
23 km north of Two Harbors on North Shore Drive, rush 30 m deep into Lake
Superior.
Minneapolis
If St. Paul is a little more dignified, Minneapolis is deliberately
progressive. It is a modern city with good theaters, night clubs, shops, a
year-round sports program, an excellent symphony orchestra and the great
University of Minnesota. As in most American cities, the typical skyscrapers
shape the cityscape. The IDS Tower in the center is the tallest
building in the city. The downtown area is dominated by the Nicollet Mall with
its numerous restaurants, shops and entertainment centers for all tastes and
budgets. Nearby is the Public Library with the Minneapolis
Planetarium. The Mall of America, located in the suburb of Bloomington, is
the largest shopping and entertainment complex in the United States. Over 520
department stores, shops, boutiques, cinemas and restaurants offer an abundance
of culinary and other temptations and make it easy to get rid of your
money. Children are in good hands in the fun Camp Snoopy amusement
park.
Art lovers get their money's worth at the Institute of Arts, where
works of art from Europe, the Orient and America are exhibited, including
paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Matisse. The Walker Art Center is
the right address for modern art (closed on Mondays). You can also attend
concerts and lectures here. The interesting one is opposite Minneapolis
Sculpture Garden. The Bell Museum of Natural History is located on
the site of the large University of Minnesota. The Minnesota
Transportation Museum is also worth a visit. The Minneapolis Orchestra
Hall is considered one of the best in the United States. Here every concert
becomes a feast for the ears. The Guthrie Theater is known for its
productions of classics, to which those interested come from a radius of
hundreds of kilometers. The Northup Auditorium on the university campus
as well as the magnificently restored State Theater Broadway shows,
ballet and concerts in downtown. The Middle Ages came to Minneapolis at the
annual Renaissance Festival. On the weekends in August and September,
you can attend tournaments or stroll through one of the many craft markets and
exhibitions. Paintings, pottery, jewelry, handmade household items and all sorts
of tempting treats are offered for sale. Just outside the city is the
magnificent Minnesota Zoological Garden with spacious outdoor
enclosures. Over 2000 plant species and 375 different animal species make it a
popular destination. In the Valleyfair amusement park, many families
are looking for relaxation, especially on weekends. A visit to the Eloise
Butter Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary in Wirth Park. The
waterfalls in Minnehaha Park became famous for the song
"Hiawatha" by the American poet Longfellow. The attractive forest area of the
North Woods also serves local recreation. As everywhere in the USA, sports also
play a major role in Minneapolis. The games of the baseball team of the "Twins"
and the teams of the "Vikings" and "Golden Gophers" (American Football) usually
take place in front of a sold out house in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
St. Paul
St. Paul, founded in 1840, has been the capital of Minnesota
since 1849. The connection to the rail network had brought prosperity to the
settlement, which was initially called Pig's Eye. Summit Avenue with
its pretty town houses testifies to this heyday, in which St. Paul's
Cathedral, which is based on the Roman St. Peter's Basilica, was built. The
library also dates from this period. It is worth visiting the nearby Alexander
Ramsey House, an imposing 15-room residence built in the style of the
French Renaissance in 1872. The interior consists largely of original
furniture. In the 1950s the city center was given a facelift, Downtown St.
Paul is a successful mix of old and new today. The Capitol, the seat of
the state government, was built around the turn of the century, tours are
offered daily. In the Landmark Center, the former building of
the Federal Court of Justice, there are art galleries, a restaurant and
exhibitions on the city's history. The St. Paul Art Center for the
Performing Arts offers theater, concerts and art exhibitions. On the
opposite side of the street is the ultra- modern Science Museum with
the fascinating omnitheater, in which film screenings convey the
experience of space travel to the visitor. The Ordway Music Theater in
the city center has two event halls that are home to opera, concerts, recitals,
dance performances, theater and pop shows. The Winter Carnival, which
takes place every year in early February, offers a change in the cold winter
months. Another major event in the city's events calendar is the Minnesota
State Fair in mid-August through early September. The state fairoffers
the opportunity to admire the award-winning breeding bulls, cows and pigs of the
local farmers and to experience a variety of concerts and shows. Roller
coasters, carousels and other amusements provide further entertainment. St. Paul
is a green city with many parks and lakes. In the summer months you can ride old
paddle steamers to the historic Fort Snelling, where you can
get an impression of the pioneering life. The fort is closed in the winter
months. Fort Snelling State Park is 6 miles southwest of the city and was
originally founded in 1819 as a military post. Soldiers, washers, blacksmiths
and cooks in original costume tell visitors how people lived in these latitudes
around 1820.
