Located deep in the southern United States, Mississippi, the beautiful
"Magnolia state", is characterized by its versatility: wide country and gently
rolling hills, high pine forests and white sandy beaches, bustling cities and
pretty small towns.
The most important battle of the American War of Independence took place in
Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863, and in Mississippi there were terrible conflicts
between the black and white population in the 1960s. But Mississippi also made
history through its scenic beauty and inspired numerous writers and other
artists, including William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Tennessee Williams, Elvis
Presley, Jimmie Rodgers and BB King.
The mighty Mississippi River flows on the western border of the southern
state. Mississippi borders the Gulf of Mexico in the east, where tourists, but
also artists and nature lovers, like to stay. Hurricane Katrina caused major
damage in 2005, but most of it has been remedied, especially with regard to
tourist attractions and casinos.
