The Missouri Valley was an important route for the first settlers in today’s USA, and St. Louis was also called the “Gateway to the West”.

Missouri borders the Mississippi River to the east; prairie lies north of the Missouri River (the longest river in the USA); in the west you will find the Great Plains, gently rolling hills in the south and the cotton growing areas in the southeast.

The St. Louis metropolitan area, Missouri’s largest urban area, has one of the largest inland ports in the United States. Historically, St. Louis was of great importance to fur traders and explorers who ventured west. Today it is a center of communication, trade, industry and culture. On the banks of the Mississippi River you can still hear ragtime, blues and Dixieland music, an expression of the city’s ongoing love affair with the imposing river.

In the Worlds of Fun leisure complex there are 120 roller coasters, carousels and similar facilities. Rides on the river steamer are also offered. The Country Club Plaza, the oldest shopping center in the USA, opened in 1922 and looks almost European with its fountains and statues. The influence of the numerous ethnic groups that made St. Louis what it is today can still be seen in the German town houses, the elegant French mansions in the south of the city and the Italian and Serbian neighborhoods. The gateway arch Monument on the river bank is 192 m high. From here, the settler treks set off into the wild west. You can enjoy the view from the observation platform and watch exhibitions on the western states. Other attractions in St. Louis include the Six Flags Over Mid America Amusement Park, the National Museum of Transport, the Missouri Botanical Garden, which works actively for the conservation of tropical rainforests, and the St. Louis Zoological Park.
