Montana, named after the mountain range in the center and east of the state, is the fourth largest state in the United States. Its surface is 380,000 km² and was shaped by huge glaciers, scorching heat, lava and inland lakes. Montana is crisscrossed by the Rocky Mountains to the west, while endless prairies dominate the landscape to the east. Montana is one of the least densely populated states in the United States.

Because of its natural resources, Montana is also known as the Treasure State. Since the first gold discovery on Grasshopper Creek in 1862, thousands of treasure hunters have come to the country. In addition to gold, copper, silver and precious stones were mined in the mines until the 1980s. Today, primarily oil, natural gas and coal are extracted.

Tourism is becoming increasingly important. Montana is popular with hunters and anglers, and the numerous golf courses and winter sports opportunities attract visitors from all over the world all year round.

The population lives mainly from agriculture. In the north, wheat, maize and barley are grown in huge fields, while in the south cowboys drive the cattle to pasture. The Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site (Internet: www.nps.gov/grko/index.htm) at Deer Lodge commemorates the era of large cattle drives in the late 19th century.

With its seven Indian reservations, Montana is one of the US states with the most and also the largest reserves in terms of area. The twelve Indian tribes that live in Montana include such well-known tribes as the Sioux, the Northern Cheyenne and the Blackfoot. In Browning, the Museum of the History of the Plains Indians (Internet: www.iacb.doi.gov/museums/museum_plains.html) invites you to learn more about the life of Native Americans.

Almost a quarter of Montana's area is state forest or state-owned, of which 20,000 km² are nature reserves, in which around 500 different animal species, including bison, elk, deer, antelope, wolves and bears, live. From Montana you can also get to Yellowstone National Park, the oldest national park in the world. The park is known for its geothermal springs. The Glacier National Park in the north of the country is very popular with campers and hikers. Especially in the months of July and August, numerous nature lovers come to the park to enjoy the unique landscape.
