On the banks of the Potomac are the Arlington National Cemetery with the grave of John F. Kennedy, the historic city of Alexandria (numerous pretty colonial houses) and Mount Vernon, George Washington's manor. Richmond was the Confederate capital during the Civil War and has many beautiful old buildings and museums worth visiting. Further east are Williamsburg, Yorktown and the "birthplace" of the USA, Jamestown, as well as three other interesting historical sites. The former capital Williamsburg is visited by tourists from all over the world. A carriage ride through the old town is romantic - the old restored Colonial Williamsburg district provides an insight into the everyday life of the colonial era. Craftsmen and citizens in contemporary costumes show visitors how to live, work and pass the time. The modern Williamsburg is known for good shopping and Busch Gardens, an amusement park that provides entertainment for young and old. The first settlers settled in Jamestown, of which hardly anything historical remains after two major fires, at the beginning of the 17th century. The Old Church Tower is the only building that has survived from this period. Yorktown played an important role in the War of Independence against British colonial power. At the Yorktown Information Center there are exhibits that commemorate the decisive battle that brought the United States the longed-for independence. It is not far from Newport News to Norfolk, an important port city with a number of important museums. The Chrysler Museum is one of the best in the United States (excellent collection of paintings, sculptures, and glass objects). The Hermitage Foundation Museum has an excellent section for oriental art. In the lovingly tended parks, people like to meet for a picnic. Several old buildings, including the oldest brick house in the United States (1636), have been preserved. You can swim at the 20 km long Ocean View Beach enjoy. Windsurfing is also popular. The Virginia Beach Resort is even more popular with visitors. The sunny seaside resort annually counts more holiday guests than any other holiday resort on the east coast. The Virginia Marine Science Museum, one of the state's most popular museums, features a huge ocean-going aquarium, turtles, sea lion and river otter habitats, and a six-story IMAX 3D cinema. The Virginia Beach Center for the Arts has temporary exhibitions for art lovers. A beautiful panoramic view of the bay opens up to visitors from the Old Cape Henry Lighthouse from, the landmark of Virginia, which was built in 1901. The surrounding area is also ideal for long walks and bike rides.

Jazz fans are drawn to Hampton for the famous Jazz Festival, and Hampton University is also worth a visit. Near the delightful small town of Charlottesville is Monticello, the magnificent mansion that President Jefferson had built. The construction period was 40 years, and the three-story building with its 35 rooms has many architectural features to offer. The Shenandoah National Park is another attraction for visitors from near and far. Cumberland Gap, the gateway to the Allegheny Mountains and Great Falls Park attract many tourists each year. In the Shenandoah Valley to the west between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains are some popular vacation spots; mighty waterfalls, peculiar rock formations and caves with impressive stalagmites guarantee unforgettable impressions. In southwestern Virginia, mountains dominate the landscape, and you can still find the old pioneering spirit here. The region is also known for its arts and crafts.
