Austria has a population of 8,387,491. Austrian territory was occupied in ancient time by Celtic peoples. Later, the Romans conquered the region. With the disintegration of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, the area was invaded by Bavarians, Goths, Huns and Lombards. Currently, the majority of the population is of Austrian origin, but there are also Yugoslavs, Turks, Germans, etc.

Approximately 67.5% of the residents live in urban areas, and 32.5% live in rural areas. Vienna, the national capital, is the most populous city, with about 1.6 million residents. Other Austrian cities with a large population concentration are: Graz (253,994), Linz (189,122), Salzburg (147,732) and Innsbruck (118,035).

According to data released in 2010 by the United Nations (UN) , Austria, with an average of 0.851, has a high Human Development Index (HDI), occupying the 25th place in the world ranking, which is formed by 169 nations. Thus, the population of Austria enjoys an excellent social standard.
