Map of Colorado – United States

About 5.6 million people currently live in Colorado. The capital of the US state is Denver. The map shows the neighboring states, the largest cities in the country, the rivers and lakes as well as the courses of the highways and the most important roads in the state. The location of the national parks can be seen.

Great Sand Dunes NP&P

In Colorado, in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, at 2,500 meters above sea level, lies the San Luis Valley plateau, which hides the largest sand dunes in all of North America. The area was named the Great Sand Dunes and covers an area of almost 100 km2. The dunes, which reach a height of up to 230 meters, have been declared a national monument and are thus under state protection.

The sand dunes formed from sand, which for millennia was brought here by the wind blowing from the west, across the plain to the mountains. However, the Rio Grande River also had a great influence on the movement of sand, which brought it together with other sediments from the surrounding hills. It is estimated that up to 4 trillion cubic meters of sand can be blown here. Although Great Sand Dunes is one of the youngest national parks in the United States, the local sand formations are more than 12,000 years old.

The character of the local landscape, rather than Colorado, is reminiscent of New Mexico. The area has relatively extreme living conditions. Here you will encounter heat, drought, wind, rain and snow. On a sunny day, the sand temperature can rise up to 60 ° C. Nevertheless, the area is home to many species of wildlife, such as the wild rabbit or the Kangaroo Rat, which is such a small hopping rodent. From the plant kingdom, there is, for example, Scurfpea, which boasts beautiful yellow flowers.

The park is interesting because there are not too many restrictions, you can drive here by road, there is the possibility of camping even if you are interested, you can easily climb one of the dunes. However, reckon with the fact that it is not easy, so you have the opportunity to ride them on a quad bike, for example. Increased security measures are in the park in winter, when the dunes are covered with a layer of snow. During the spring thaw, a lot of water flows down from the mountains, so even large lakes begin to form in the area.
