Connecticut, the constitutional state
The state of Connecticut had a colonial constitution as early as 1639 and was the fifth US state to sign the Constitution of the Independent United States in 1788. Connecticut is referred to as “The Constitution State ” and “Nutmeg-State”. Nutmeg plants made their way to Connecticut as early as the 18th century and have been grown there, along with other agricultural products, since that time.

Formerly independent New Haven merged with Connecticut in 1664. New Haven was subsequently (1701-1885), along with Hartfort, the capital of Connecticut.
First Dutch, then English
Before the arrival of the whites, the Algonquian Native Americans lived in what is now Connecticut. The first white settlers in the state were fur trappers from the Netherlands. They built the fortress “House of Hope” near the capital Hartford. After the Dutch, the British came to the state and established the settlements of Windsor and Wethersfield.
Independent of the English Kingdom
Connecticut, along with the 12 founding states of the United States, declared independence from Great Britain in 1776 . This led to bloody clashes between British and American troops. The American troops of the colonists were supported by the French military. This was the only way they could ultimately win the First War of Independence. The war between the colonists and the British only officially ended in 1783. Slavery was abolished in the US state of Connecticut in 1848.
Agriculture defines Connecticut
Connecticut is an agricultural state. In addition to livestock, numerous crops are grown, as well as tobacco. Nutmeg is cultivated extensively. Connecticut’s industry is primarily textile, metal and engineering.
