India is a South Asian country. It borders Pakistan in the northwest, China, Nepal and Bhutan in the north, and Bangladesh and Myanmar in the northeast, and is bathed by the Arabian Sea in the west, the Indian Ocean in the south, and across the Gulf of Bengal to the east. The capital is New Delhi, with a population of 312 300 residents (2004) and the other main cities are Bombay (metropolitan area: 17 340 900 inhab.), Calcutta (metropolitan area: 14 362 500 inhab.), Delhi 10 400 900 (metropolitan area: 17 367 300 inhab.), Stepmother (metropolitan area: 5 906 000 inhab.), Haiderabad (metropolitan area: 5 862 500 inhab.), Bangalore (metropolitan area: 6 024 800 inhab.), Ahmadabad (area metropolitan: 4 970 200 inhab.), Pune (metropolitan area: 3 978 700 inhab.), Kanpur (metropolitan area: 2 850 400 inhab.), Lucknow (metropolitan area: 2 401 700 inhab.) and Nagpur (metropolitan area: 2 394 300 inhab.). It is the seventh largest country in the world, with an area of 3,287,590 km2 . It encompasses three large areas of distinct relief: the Himalayas, the highlands of the North, the plateau of the Decão and the plains of the South.
Almost 3/5 of the soil is arable and about 1/4 of the cultivated land is irrigated. The forest corresponds to 1/4 of the territory.
Climate
The climate is tropical monsoon characterized by two seasons: a hot and humid one, from April / May to September, when large amounts of rain fall; and a drier and less hot one, from October to March. India is the place on Earth where the greatest amount of precipitation was recorded: Cherrapunji. However, Northwest India has desert areas (Thar).
Economy
In agriculture, the main productions are rice, sugar cane, peanuts, kapok, rapeseed, mustard, chickpeas, sorghum, corn, potatoes, coconut, bananas and tea. Most of these products are intended for domestic consumption and some, such as tea and sugar, are intended for export. The extractive industry, almost all controlled by the Government, includes iron, bauxite, manganese, chromite, zinc, copper, lead, gold and diamonds. Energy resources include coal and few oil and natural gas reserves. Manufactures include heavy and high-tech industries such as cement, steel, refined sugar, paper and cardboard, soda, jute products, aluminum, nylon and polyester yarns, fabrics from cotton, bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles, buses and trucks, pharmaceutical products, computer articles and gold jewelry. Altogether, the transport material industry is in 1st place, followed by the chemical industry. India’s main trading partners are the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany.
Environmental indicator: the value of carbon dioxide emissions, per capita (metric tons, 1999), is 1.1.
Population
Even with the creation of family planning and birth rate control programs, the number of births remains very high, when compared to economic growth capable of improving the living standards of most of the population. India is the second most populous country in the world, with 1 095 351 995 residents, in 2006, and with a density of 328.59 inhab./km 2 . The birth and death rates are, respectively, 22.01% o and 8.18% o. Average life expectancy is 64.71 years. The value of the Human Development Index (HDI) is 0.684 and the value of the Gender-adjusted Development Index (IDG) is 0.688 (2001). It is estimated that, in 2025, the population will be 1 377 264 000 residents. The largest ethnolinguistic groups are Hindi, with 45%, Telugu (8%), Bengali (8%), Marathi (7%), Tamil (7%), Urdu (5%) and Gujarat ( 5%). The most prominent religions are Hinduism (80%) and Islam (11%). The official languages are Hindi and English.
