Member State of the United States of America. Located on the eastern Atlantic coast of the country, it covers an area of 5 133 km 2 and has a population of 829 200 residents (2004). It is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and borders the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey to the north and Maryland to the south and west. The capital is the city of Dover.
Delaware, the second smallest state in the United States, consists largely of rural areas with a 45 km coastline. Lewes is a pretty historic coastal town with some lovely beaches. Cape Henlopen State Park is Delaware’s largest nature reserve and is known for the nesting colonies of its seabirds and its white sand dunes.
Delaware was the first state to sign the United States Constitution in 1787. There are many historic places here – Fort Christina Historic Park, for example, where Finns and Swedes founded Delaware’s first permanent settlement in 1638. Delaware’s administrative and economic center, Wilmington, was founded in the same year. Museums, galleries, a port, and a tram system reminiscent of San Francisco’s cable cars can be found here.

Wilmington was founded in 1638 and has museums, galleries and a harbor. The country’s first permanent settlement was located on the site of Fort Christina Historic Park. Most residents live in rural areas, and even the capital, Dover, is very small by American standards. The former village green is now the city center. Other attractions in Dover include the Delaware State Museum and the Presbyterian Church from 1790. Outside the capital are the historic New Castle and the fishing town of Lewes. Rehoboth Beach and the Delaware Seashore State Park are also worth a visit.
