Wilmington was founded in 1638 and has museums, galleries and a harbor. The country’s first permanent settlement was located on the site of Fort Christina Historic Park. Most residents live in rural areas, and even the capital, Dover, is very small by American standards. The former village green is now the city center. Other attractions in Dover include the Delaware State Museum and the Presbyterian Church from 1790. Outside the capital are the historic New Castle and the fishing town of Lewes.
