Member State of the United States of America. Located in the south of the country, it covers an area of 692,408 km 2 and has 28,304,596 residents (2017). It is bathed by the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast, bordering Mexico in the southwest, and bordering the states of New Mexico in the west, Oklahoma in the north, and Arkansas and Louisiana in the east. The capital is the city of Austin.

Texas, the “Lone Star State”, is the second largest state in the United States. Its geography is characterized by huge mountain ranges, extensive plains, beautiful beaches and gently rolling landscapes.

Although Texas is primarily associated with its wild west past and cowboys, it also has a number of cosmopolitan cities to offer. Dallas is a cultivated city with glittering skyscrapers, elegant shops, good restaurants and a rich cultural life. Austin is characterized by a diverse music scene and a young retro culture that is committed to Keep Austin Weird, but there are also plenty of boutiques here. On the other hand, a pronounced western atmosphere can be found in Fort Worth, where every Saturday evening, in the style of the Old West, rodeos and cattle drives entertain the masses.

Visitors can also saddle themselves at a working ranch, relax on sunny beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, visit Houston’s many galleries, or spend time with the family in one of the many amusement parks, zoos and aquariums.

  • According to acronymmonster, the nickname of Texas is The Lone Star State.

Attractions in Texas

Abilene

Abilene is a replica pioneer settlement. The historic old town is north of the railway line. Historic houses include Dodd-Harkrider House, which shows life in America around 1915, the Paramount Theater and the former Motel Abilene Courts from 1930. South of Abilene is the Buffalo Gap Historic Village, a large museum with the original Old Taylor County court and prison from 1879 at its center.

Austin

The beautiful Texas capital, Austin, is the gateway to Hill Country and the Highland Lakes. The University of Texas is home to the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library, the Texas Confederate Museum, and the Governor’s Mansion, which was built in 1856. Attractions include the Texas State Capitol, the Texas Memorial Museum and the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Music lovers will find countless music bars in the American capital of live music. In summer, over a million bats start their nightly hunt for insects at the Congress Bridge every summer.

Cheer on basketball players

Along with baseball, hockey and football, basketball is one of the most popular sports in the USA. When the San Antonio Spurs play a home game at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, the mood is really good, which is further fueled by the San Antonio Spurs cheerleaders Silver Dancer.

Big Bend National Park

South of El Paso is the Big Bend National Park. Deserts, dense forests, high mountains and the deep canyons furrowed through the Rio Grande form an impressive landscape right on the border with Mexico. The national park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Part of the Chihuahua desert, in which agaves, mesquite trees and yucca plants grow, lies in the Big Bend National Park. Bird watchers will find a variety of bird species in Big Bend National Park. Racing cuckoos (road runners) and turkey vultures can be observed here. Popular sports are especially hiking and white water rides in the dramatically beautiful Santa Elena Canyon. The Boquillas Canyon is also worth seeing.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico was an ideal pirate shelter in the 19th century and is now a well-known seaport and holiday resort. The city’s most popular attractions include the USS Lexington museum ship and the Texas State Aquarium. The Museum District is home to the Museum of Asian Cultures, the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, the South Texas Institute for the Arts and the Heritage Park with historic houses. Padre Island is located near the coast, a narrow but 170 km long sandbar, which is ideal for fishing and all kinds of water sports. A dam connects the island with Corpus Christi.

Dallas

Dallas has developed from a former trading post to a globally recognized business and fashion metropolis. The city has state-of-the-art skyscrapers, elegant shops, excellent restaurants and a diverse cultural life. In Old City Park there is the Dallas Heritage Village with historic houses, a church, a school and a main street from the settler days. The Reunion Tower has a glass elevator that leads up to the 50th floor; there is a viewing terrace and a restaurant that rotates on a platform where dance events take place in the evenings. Dealey Plaza was the scene of John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the Sixth Floor Museum displays testimony to the dramatic event. In the Fair Park you can visit numerous other interesting museums.

El Paso

El Paso is located in western Texas on the Mexican border that the Rio Grande forms, amidst the dramatic Franklin Mountains. The closest Texan city is further away than the cities of New Mexico, Arizona and Southern California. El Paso International Airport is located 13 km east of the city and is a good starting point for trips to the mountains and canyons. El Paso has a wide range of cultural and sporting leisure options such as symphony concerts, theaters, museums, libraries, horse and dog races. Several music festivals take place annually. The Sun Bowl Stadium is also located in El Paso.

Fort Worth

Fort Worth, originally a military post, later played an important role as a cattle market and is still a center for cattle breeding today. The spirit of days gone by is brought back to life when cowboys drive a flock of Longhorns along Exchange Avenue through the historic part of the city. The Cattle Drive takes place daily at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The historic slaughterhouses in Northside are reminiscent of the Wild West. The Amon Carter Museum of Western Art, the Sid Richardson Museum, the Fort Worth Art Museum and the Kimbell Art Museum are not only recommended for art lovers. Not to be missed is the National Cowgirl Museum and the associated Hall of Fame: the museum is the only one in the world that honors women who have advanced the west of America with their pioneering spirit.

Galveston Island

Galveston Island, southeast of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico, has a colorful past. Pirates are said to have been up to mischief here. Today the island is more known for beautiful beaches, historic houses built around the turn of the century, excellent water sports and their fish-rich waters. One tip is the Lone Star Flight Museum, which has the nation’s finest collection of restored aircraft.

Highland Lakes

In the center of Texas extends the 240 km long chain of the seven Highland Lakes, which are a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, anglers and bird watchers along the Colorado River. A trip to the beautiful natural surroundings is very worthwhile. The area is home to Longhorn Cavern State Park and the Eagle Eye Observatory.

Hill Country

The Hill Country west of San Antonio is ideal for hiking. You can spend an active holiday on the farm on numerous ranches in the area. New Braunfels, between Austin and San Antonio on the edge of the Hill Country, was founded by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. The Guadalupe River flows through New Braunfels and is a popular destination for canoeists, white water riders and anglers. Fredericksburg was also a stronghold of German immigrants. Her descendants still celebrate traditional German festivals today. Interesting sights in Hill Country include numerous caves such as the Cascade Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora as well as the Garner State Park, which has campsites, and the Enchanted Rock State Park. There are 42 beautiful wineries along the Texas Wine Trail,

The city is also the headquarters of American space travel and an important port city. The 80 km Houston Ship Canal connects Houston with the Gulf of Mexico. Downtown is home to the modern Civic Center, Sam Houston Historical Park, Tranquility Park and Old Market Square. The Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center features films about NASA’s program, spaceships and astronaut equipment. The San Jacinto Battleground Monument in La Porte near Houston not only offers a wonderful view over Houston, but also commemorates the battle of 1836, in which the Texans fought for their independence. The old battleship Texas is anchored here.

Odessa’s meteorite crater

Five meteorite craters can be explored southwest of Odessa. The largest of these five craters is 168 meters in diameter, making it the second largest meteorite crater r in the United States. The circular impact craters were formed when numerous meteorites hit Earth 20,000 and 30,000 years ago. A small museum informs visitors on site about what happened a long time ago.

Padre Island

The 210 km long and 3 km wide strip of land Padre Island is the Texas playground on the Gulf Coast. The sand dune island, which is divided into two parts, can be easily reached by car from Port Isabel via the Queen Isabella Causeway and from Corpus Christi via the JFK Causeway. The Padre Island National Seashore National Park is in the northern part of the island. Nature lovers, bird watchers, anglers, water sports enthusiasts and sun worshipers will get their money’s worth here.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

In the far north of Texas, near Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is located in the breathtaking landscape of the second largest canyon in the United States. It is ideal for hiking, horse riding, picnics and camping. The Panhandle Plains Museum in the nearby town of Canyon illustrates the development history of this region from the early history of the Indians through the pioneering days to the present day. The Kwahadi Museum of the American Indian in Amarillo is all about the history and preservation of Indian culture.

Ranches and cowboys

The Southfork Ranch was one of the filming locations for the famous American TV series “Dallas”. The ranch is open daily all year round and offers guided tours. Bandera, located in Hill Country, is nicknamed the ‘World Capital of Cowboys’. A vacation on the ranch is possible as a cowboy. Numerous ranches offer activities such as horse riding (also with cattle drive), playing golf, quad tours, fishing and hunting and have swimming pools, fitness programs and farm animals.

Rodeos

Rodeos are held regularly in all major Texas cities. A special highlight is the annual rodeo and the large cattle exhibition in Houston, which takes place from late February to mid-March. Here the world’s best cowboys compete in various disciplines such as bull riding, bull wrestling and lasso throwing. The daily program includes colorful western shows, fast car races, exciting riding competitions and cattle auctions.

San Antonio

San Antonio, a modern and affluent city, cannot deny its Spanish past, which is evident in the fiestas, the architecture, the rodeos and of course in the lifestyle. The romantic River Walk along the San Antonio River with numerous shops, innumerable restaurants and bars is famous far beyond the borders of Texas. The former Mission Alamo is a National Historic Monument commemorating the bravery and patriotism of the Texans. German traces can be found in the King William district. Other attractions include five other Spanish missions, the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), the Buckhorn Museum, the La Villita Historic Arts Village, the nearby Sea World and the Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge

In the very south of Texas is the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, a bird watcher’s paradise. Different climatic conditions meet here such as subtropical climate, the climate of the Chihuahuan Desert, the Gulf Coast and the Great Plains. The migratory birds come here from South America and Central America along the central migration route and the Mississippi migration route. There are ospreys, yellow whistling geese, great mud runners, hen harriers and hummingbirds to discover.
