Paterson lies in the Passaic River Valley, New Jersey, 20 kilometers northwest of New York. Prior to colonization, these lands belonged to the Delaware Indian tribes of the Lenape.

The city is named after the then Governor of New Jersey.William Paterson. At the end of the 18th century, with the support of the young independent state of the United States, Paterson’s manufacturers master the power of the Passaic River to mechanize the production process at their enterprises. This made it possible to increase the volume of manufactured goods, and gain independence from British imports. By the middle of the 19th century, there were more than a dozen watermills along the river, setting in motion the factory machines of textile, weapons (John Colt’s initiatives) and the famous silk-spinning industry. Rail links, labor shortages in the city’s factories and the new opportunities of the Industrial Revolution provoked an active resettlement of migrant workers, engineers and inventors from all over the world: from the Middle Eastto Latin America. Today Paterson has more than 50 ethnic groups living freely in compact historic districts according to their traditions and beliefs.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Industrial History Museum in Paterson was opened for citizens and visitors. The expositions consist of early 18th century manufacturing machines, textile and weapons products, silk products, as well as stands with the first developments in the field of submarines.

The home of wealthy industrialist Catolina Lambert, the owner of a silk weaving factory, is better known in the city as Castle Lambert or Bella Vista. Built at the end of the 19th century in the style of medieval fortresses. The 4-story building with fireplace chimneys and an observation tower is now part of the Garret Mountain Preserve. One of the floors houses the city library, the other three are given over to the museum. The observation tower with a viewing platform is open for free visits.

The central recreational area in Paterson is a network of city parks centered on the Eastside, Westside, and Pennington areas. The historical area of the Great Falls waterfalls on the Passaic River is especially popular among vacationers.
