DUTY-FREE SHOPPING

Overview

The following items can be imported into Jordan duty-free (people over 18 years of age):

200 cigarettes and 200 g of tobacco;
1 liter of wine or spirits;
Personal effects including a laptop and a camera.
Gifts up to a value of 200 JD.

Import restrictions

An import permit is required to import hunting weapons and ammunition (not in hand luggage).

Prohibited imports

Weapons and ammunition (see also import restrictions), radios, narcotics, pornographic material.

Prohibited exports

Antiques and corals.

MONEY

Currency

1 Jordanian dinar = 100 piasters = 1000 fils. Currency abbreviation: JD, JOD (ISO code).

Banknotes are available in denominations of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 JD.

Coins are worth ½ dinars and ¼ dinars, as well as 10 piastres, 5, 2 1/2 and 1 piasters in circulation. The JD is pegged to the US dollar.

Because of the high loss of value of the rial, so-called Iran checks are in circulation instead of banknotes and are used as a common means of payment. They are issued exclusively by the Central Bank of Iran.

Credit cards

American Express, Visa, MasterCard and Diners Club are partially accepted. Details from the issuer of the credit card in question.

ATMs

cards with the Cirrus or Maestro symbol are accepted in Europe and around the world, in a few shops in Jordan and at ATMs in larger cities. Further information from banks and credit institutes.

Attention: Travelers who pay with their bank card abroad and want to withdraw money should find out about the possibilities of using their card from their bank before starting their journey.

Bank opening times

Sa-Thu 8.30 a.m.-3 p.m. Ramadan: 8.30 a.m. to 10 a.m., some also open in the afternoon.

Foreign exchange regulations

Import of local currency and foreign currency in cash up to the equivalent of JD 15,000 permitted, in addition to which there is an obligation to declare.

Export of foreign currencies only up to the amount declared.

Export of local currency is only permitted up to JD 300.

Israeli currency may not be imported into Jordan, but it can be exchanged at the border.

Currency Exchange

Money can be exchanged in banks and exchange offices. Due to the unfavorable exchange rates in Jordan, foreign currencies should be exchanged for the Jordanian national currency before traveling to Jordan; US dollars are particularly suitable for taking with you. Upscale hotels also exchange money, but the exchange is the most expensive there.

Overview

Official language Arabic. English is widely used as the lingua franca.

CLIMATE

Best travel time

As a country located in Middle East according to topschoolsoflaw, the eastern and southern parts of the country have a desert climate.

The Jordan Valley, which is below sea level, is warm in winter and very hot in summer and, like the Red Sea coast, has a subtropical climate.

Mediterranean climate on the edge of the Jordan Rift

Most precipitation falls between November and March, no precipitation from May to September, cooler in December / January. The best travel time falls on the months of March, April, May as well as October and November.

SHOP

Overview

Every city has a souk (market) and there is a large selection of good craft shops and jewelry stores. Amman has an excellent gold and jewelry market. Popular souvenirs include Hebron glass, mother-of-pearl boxes, water pipes, pottery, backgammon games, embroidered tablecloths, rosaries with jewels, nativity scenes made of olive wood, prayer pillows made of leather, brass and copper items and hand-embroidered caftans. Shop opening times: Sa-Thu 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

NIGHTLIFE

Introduction

There are cinemas in some of the larger cities and there are nightclubs and theaters in Amman. Many 4 and 5 star hotels have their own nightclubs and discos.
