The country has a total area of approximately 21,041 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in the region. The geography of El Salvador is largely mountainous, with two thirds of its land area consisting of hills and mountain ranges. The highest point in El Salvador is Cerro El Pital at an altitude of 2,730 meters above sea level. The country also has areas of flatland along its Pacific coast and in its interior valleys. El Salvador’s educational system consists of three levels: primary school (ages 6-11), secondary school (ages 12-17) and higher education (ages 18+). Primary education is compulsory for all children between the ages 6-11 years old and is free for all citizens. Secondary education is also free for students who complete primary school successfully. Higher education is provided by public universities which are free for those who have passed their secondary school exams or by private universities which can be quite expensive. El Salvador also has technical schools offering vocational courses such as carpentry and welding as well as professional schools offering degrees in medicine, law, engineering, etc. In addition to formal education programs there are also non-formal programs that provide alternative learning opportunities such as adult literacy classes or vocational training courses designed to equip adults with job-related skills.
