According to topschoolsintheusa.com, Eritrea is a small, East African nation located on the Red Sea and bordered by Sudan to the north and west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast. The country has a total area of 117,600 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest countries in Africa. Geographically, Eritrea is divided into three distinct parts: lowland coastal plains in the west and southwest, highland plateau in the center and east, and rugged mountains in the northeast. The highest point in Eritrea is Mount Soira at an altitude of 3,018 meters above sea level. Eritrea’s educational system consists of four levels: pre-primary school (ages 4-5), primary school (ages 6-12), secondary school (ages 13-17) and higher education (ages 18+). Pre-primary education is not compulsory but it is available for those who can afford it. Primary education is compulsory for all children between 6-12 years old but attendance rates are low due to poverty and poor access to schools in rural areas. Secondary education is free for students who complete primary school successfully but again attendance rates are low due to financial constraints or lack of interest from students. Higher education is provided by public universities which are free for those who have passed their secondary school exams or by private universities which can be quite expensive. In addition to formal education programs, there are also non-formal programs that provide alternative learning opportunities such as adult literacy classes or vocational training courses designed to equip adults with job-related skills.
