The total population of Laos is 7.2 million people with more than half of these being ethnic Lao. The official language of Laos is Lao, although French and English are widely spoken as second languages. The geography of Laos consists mostly of mountains and valleys with some flat plains in between. The highest point in the country is Phou Bia at 2,819 meters above sea level while some of its largest rivers include the Mekong River and Nam Ou River. Additionally, there are several national parks and nature reserves located throughout the country that provide habitats for endangered species such as Asian elephants and Javan rhinoceros. Education in Laos is compulsory from ages 6 – 15 years old with primary school followed by secondary school from ages 16 – 18 years old. Students can then pursue higher education at universities located primarily in major cities such as Vientiane where they can study a wide range of disciplines including business administration, engineering and medicine among others. Furthermore, there are several scholarship programs available to help students from low-income backgrounds attend university at no cost or reduced cost tuition fees. Additionally, technical training centers have been established throughout much of the country to provide alternative educational opportunities to those who may not be able to attend university due to financial or geographical constraints.
