The region consists of 607 islands scattered across 2,700,000 square kilometers (1,042,520 sq mi) of ocean. The islands are divided into four main geographic groups: the Marianas, the Carolines, the Marshalls and the Gilbert Islands. The terrain is mostly low-lying coral atolls and islands with some higher mountains on some islands such as Guam and Saipan. The climate is tropical with hot humid summers and mild winters in most parts of the region. The educational system in Micronesia consists of both public and private schools. Primary education (ages 6-15) is free for all children in public schools but there are also private institutions available for those who can afford it. Secondary education consists of three years of schooling from ages 15-18 after which students may pursue either university or technical college studies. Higher education institutions include several universities such as Palau Community College, College of Micronesia-FSM, Northern Marianas College, as well as many other private colleges and universities offering degree programs in various fields such as business management, engineering, hospitality management and more. Additionally, students may pursue vocational training programs at public or private technical centers such as Yap State Vocational Training Center or Chuuk State Technical Institute.
