The region consists of 607 islands scattered across 2,700,000 square kilometers (1,042,520 sq mi) of ocean. The islands are divided into four main geographic groups: the Marianas, the Carolines, the Marshalls and the Gilbert Islands. The terrain is mostly low-lying coral atolls and islands with some higher mountains on some islands such as Guam and Saipan. The climate is tropical with hot humid summers and mild winters in most parts of the region. The educational system in Micronesia consists of both public and private schools.
