It is a landlocked country with a varied geography including the Sahara Desert in the north, the Sahel savanna in the south and numerous rivers and lakes in between. The climate is tropical with two distinct seasons – a dry season from October to March and a wet season from April to September. The education system of Niger consists of three levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary. Primary schooling starts at age 6 and lasts for 7 years. Secondary school begins at age 13 and lasts for 5 years. At the end of secondary school students take an exam which determines whether they can continue their studies at the tertiary level. Tertiary education includes universities, polytechnics, colleges of education or industry training centers which offer a range of qualifications from certificates to doctorates. Niger also offers students the opportunity to study abroad through student exchange programs with countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. These programs provide students with an opportunity to gain international experience while developing their language skills in their chosen language(s).
