According to topschoolsintheusa.com, North Korea is located in East Asia, bordered by China and Russia to the north and South Korea to the south. It is a mountainous country with three-quarters of its land area covered in steep hills and mountains. The two most prominent mountain ranges are the Hamgyong Range in the east, which includes the highest peak in North Korea, Mt. Paektu at 9,000 feet, and the Rangrim Mountains in the west. The country’s longest river is the Yalu River which forms part of its border with China. When it comes to education, North Korea has a single-track system that follows a Soviet model of primary school for six years followed by secondary school for five years. All students are required to complete 10 years of schooling and then pass an entrance exam for higher education. Higher education consists of four-year universities or specialized vocational schools that offer two or three year courses depending on the subject matter. Despite having more than 1,000 universities and colleges throughout North Korea, only about 30% of all students make it to higher education due to lack of resources and government restrictions on student mobility. Education is highly valued by North Korean society; however, most schools lack basic supplies such as textbooks and computers due to limited resources and international sanctions.
