According to topschoolsintheusa.com, Oman is a country located on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It has a total area of 309,500 square kilometers and is bordered by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Iran. The country is divided into eleven governorates and has a population of over five million people. Oman’s terrain consists mainly of desert plains and mountains with its highest point at Jabal Shams which rises to 3,009 meters above sea level. The climate in Oman is generally hot and dry with temperatures averaging between 25-35°C in summer and 15-25°C in winter. Oman’s education system consists of six levels: pre-primary, primary, preparatory (middle school), secondary (high school), technical/vocational and higher education. Pre-primary education covers children aged three to five years old where they are taught basic skills such as reading, writing, mathematics, physical development activities and Islamic studies. Primary education lasts for six years while the preparatory stage lasts for three years followed by four years of secondary schooling which prepares students for higher education or vocational training programs. The Ministry of Education oversees all levels of schooling including technical/vocational training institutes which offer courses in fields such as engineering, nursing or business related subjects that last from two to four years depending on the field chosen by the student. Higher education consists mainly of universities offering bachelor’s degrees in various fields such as medicine, engineering or business management among many others with some universities also offering master’s degrees and doctorates. There are currently eight public universities in Oman: Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) located in Muscat; Dhofar University (DU) located in Salalah; Al-Zahra College for Women (AZCW) located in Muscat; Nizwa University (NU) located in Nizwa; Sohar University (SU) located in Sohar; Ibri College of Technology (ICT) located in Ibri; Sur College of Applied Sciences (SCAS) located in Sur; and Al Sharqiya University (ASU) located at Ibra. All universities offer courses taught both in English as well as Arabic languages allowing international students to pursue their higher studies here as well. In addition to traditional course offerings some universities also offer specialized programs such as international exchange programs with European countries allowing Omani students to gain valuable experience abroad while still receiving credit towards their degree back home.
