The capital city is Bratislava and other major cities include Kosice, Presov, and Banska Bystrica. The educational system in Slovakia follows a three-tier system with compulsory primary education from ages six to fifteen followed by upper secondary school until age eighteen. Primary education consists of eight grades while upper secondary school consists of four grades. Following upper secondary school students can pursue further studies at university or vocational schools which offer courses such as engineering, medicine and law. The literacy rate in Slovakia is very high with an estimated 99% of adults being able to read and write according to the latest available data from 2019. This can be attributed to investment in educational infrastructure over recent decades as well as the government’s commitment towards providing quality education for all citizens regardless of their social class or background. There are several universities located throughout Slovakia offering degrees in areas such as business administration, engineering, medicine and law amongst others. In addition to traditional universities there are also several technical schools offering courses such as hairdressing, hospitality management and automotive engineering for those looking for more practical skills upon graduation from upper secondary school. The Slovakian government has been investing heavily in educational infrastructure over recent years with new schools being built across all levels and up-to-date resources provided for students attending them. This has enabled children from all backgrounds to benefit from access to quality education which was not available just a few generations ago.
