The country covers an area of 246,201 square miles and has a population of over 15 million people. Somalia has a tropical monsoon climate with hot and humid summers and mild winters. The geography of Somalia is dominated by plateaus which occupy the northern and central parts of the country. The Jubba River Valley is one of Somalia’s most important regions, as it provides fertile land for agricultural production. The Somali coast is also home to several coral reefs which are popular with tourists. In addition, there are two mountain ranges in Somalia: the Cal Madow Mountains in the north-east and the Karkaar Mountains along the western border with Ethiopia. The educational system in Somalia consists of three levels: primary school (ages 6-14), secondary school (ages 14-18) and tertiary education (university). Primary education in Somalia is free for all children aged 6-14 years old; however, due to poverty levels many children do not have access to this level of education. Secondary education is provided by government schools or private institutions; however, most students are unable to attend due to financial constraints or lack of access to resources such as books or computers. Tertiary education in Somalia is provided by universities such as Somali National University (SNU) which offers courses such as medicine, engineering, law and economics amongst others; Mogadishu University which offers courses such as accounting and finance; Amoud University which provides courses such as information technology; East Africa University which offers courses such as business administration; Banaadir University which provides courses such as political science; Banadir International University offering degrees in engineering; Puntland State University offering degrees in nursing; and Simad University providing degrees in architecture amongst others. In recent years there has been an increase in access to online learning platforms for those who are unable to attend traditional universities due to financial constraints or lack of access resources such as books or computers. These platforms provide students with access to quality educational resources allowing them benefit from tertiary education regardless their social class or background.
