South Africa covers an area of 1,219,912 km2 and has a population of over 55 million people. It is divided into nine provinces with each province having its own government and legislature. The geography of South Africa is varied and includes mountain ranges such as the Drakensberg Mountains in the east; vast plains in the north; grasslands in the south; desert regions in the west; coastal areas along its many long shorelines; and numerous rivers and lakes throughout. The educational system in South Africa consists of three levels: primary school (ages 5-13); secondary school (ages 13-18); and tertiary education (university). Primary school education is free for all children aged 5-13 years old. Primary schools are largely government funded but there are also a number of private schools available to those who can afford it. Secondary schools are also largely government funded but there are some private institutions available as well. Tertiary education in South Africa consists mainly of universities which offer courses such as law, economics, engineering and medicine amongst others. These universities are accredited by the Department of Higher Education & Training (DHET) which ensures that these institutions meet certain standards to ensure quality teaching and learning materials are provided to students. Some popular universities include University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (UP) and University of Witwatersrand (Wits). In addition to traditional university courses, there are also vocational training centers which provide students with practical skills needed to enter specific fields such as construction or engineering after completion of their studies. There are also online learning platforms available which provide students with access to quality educational resources regardless of their social class or background allowing them to benefit from tertiary education from home or any location they choose.
