Tourism also plays an important role in South Dakota’s economy with many visitors coming each year to enjoy its natural beauty and attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial and Crazy Horse Memorial. The cost of living in South Dakota is relatively low compared to other states due to its relatively small size and low population density. Despite this, it still has a vibrant culture with plenty of activities for residents and visitors alike including art galleries, museums, festivals, concerts, sports teams (such as the Rapid City Rush), rodeos (such as Sturgis Motorcycle Rally), outdoor recreation (such as hunting), skiing/snowboarding at Terry Peak Ski Area or Great Bear Recreation Park), fishing on one of the many rivers or lakes throughout the state, camping in one of its national parks or state parks)and much more! It is located along the Missouri River in central South Dakota and has a population of around 14,000 people. The city was founded in 1880 as a fur trading post and has since become a thriving center for business, culture, and education. There are several historical sites to explore such as the State Capitol Building, Cultural Heritage Center, and Fort Pierre Chouteau. Other attractions include the South Dakota Discovery Center which features interactive exhibits about the state’s history and culture. The Oahe Dam Visitor Center is also worth visiting with a variety of displays showcasing the area’s natural resources. For outdoor activities, you can take a stroll along the Missouri River or visit one of several parks such as Steamboat Park or La Framboise Island Nature Area. There are also plenty of opportunities for fishing or boating on nearby lakes like Lake Oahe or Lake Sharpe. Lastly, don’t forget about downtown Pierre which offers unique shops and eateries as well as art galleries and live music venues.
