It has a total area of 35,808 square kilometers and a population of approximately 23 million people. Taiwan is bordered to the north by the People’s Republic of China, to the east by the Philippine Sea, to the south by the Bashi Channel, and to the west by the Taiwan Strait. Its terrain consists of mostly rugged mountains on its east coast with lowlands in its western half. The highest point in Taiwan is Yushan at 3,952 meters above sea level. The climate in Taiwan is generally subtropical with hot summers and mild winters. Taiwan’s education system consists of six levels: pre-primary education (ages 3-5), primary education (ages 6-11), lower secondary education (ages 12-15), upper secondary education (ages 16-18), tertiary education (ages 19+) and adult education/vocational training. All levels are provided free of charge by public schools; however private schools are also available at all levels but require tuition fees. Higher education in Taiwan is offered at universities such as National Tsing Hua University; National Chiao Tung University; National Cheng Kung University; National Central University; National Yang Ming University; National Sun Yat Sen University among others. These universities offer undergraduate degrees in various fields such as business administration, engineering, law, medicine and science as well as postgraduate courses covering disciplines such as humanities, social sciences natural sciences engineering sciences and applied sciences.
