It has a total land area of 331,210 km2 and a population of over 95 million. The geography of Vietnam is divided into three distinct regions: the northern, central, and southern parts. The northern part consists mainly of highlands and hilly terrain while the central part is made up mostly of flat plains and rolling hills. The southern region is characterized by tropical rainforest, mangroves, and miles of coastline along the South China Sea. The educational system in Vietnam is based on the Soviet model which includes five levels: pre-primary, primary, lower secondary, upper secondary and higher education. Pre-primary education starts at age three with preschools that focus on providing early childhood development experiences such as play-based learning activities. Primary education begins at age six and covers six years in total with classes from first to sixth grade. Lower secondary education lasts for three years with classes from seventh to ninth grade followed by upper secondary education which lasts for two more years with classes from tenth to twelfth grade. Higher education can be pursued at universities or colleges after completion of upper secondary school.
