The Running Shoe Materials: Present To Your Feet

In keeping with the theme of the last post, we want to provide more specific information about the alternatives in a matter of materials that currently exist when it comes to choosing a type of Running Shoe, but not before again to tell that from our perspective a good Runner should have various types for different situations subject to multiple factors from disturbances in the musculoskeletal system to specific training objectives and/or circumstantial, as already will have been arguing on this blog for some time.

Sports footwear firms key to get new models that achieve above all a good balance between cushioning and lightness, and combining materials for stability (Arc Bridge, strip Mesh), flexibility (transverse grooves), damping/lightness (Air, Gel, Cushlon, 4 d foam, Micro G, Flywire), breathability, durability (Duralon rubber BRS 100, Shore 35 A-Shore 78 D)… they offer different designs and models of sports shoes and Running in particular. Brands called them “system” to define them and market them (Spine, Zoom, Shox, Response Cushion).

But… What is behind all these trade names? If we focus on the properties of materials, we will see what they offer in the pure practice. We are going to comment that most influence the mechanics of running shoes, who make up the media/midsole of the shoe and the template ortopodologica (according to information from Shoesespecially.com)

Thermoplastic Polyurethanes: is a compound of capsules that stored energy released in each stride. It is three times more resistant EVA foam and its temperature range for optimal performance is between -20° and 40°C. high resistance to wear and abrasion, tensile and the tear, very good ability of cushioning and flexibility at low temperatures, tenacious and excellent elastic recovery. For example, the Adidas Boost.):

EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate): is a polymer that approaches to elastomers in terms of softness and flexibility, however, can be processed like thermoplastics, so this type of materials is called elastomer thermoplastic. Non-toxic, washable, low water absorption, lightweight and recyclable, less rigid than other materials. Good resistance to low temperatures and the estres-cracking, properties of adhesive hot melt water, and resistance to UV radiation-resistant. It has little or no odor. The content of acetate in EVA vinyl used in the footwear can vary between 15 and 20%. There are many models with this material, an example is the midsole U4IC.

Polypropylene thermoplastic (mixture of copolymers): is a lightweight low density material and great resistance to high temperatures and stress cracking (split by beating).

ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene): is a plastic that is very resistant to impact, rigid and with great capacity of mechanical resistance. Very tenacious at any temperature (up to-40° C). High hardness and low water absorption. Terluran, Ineos ABS, GE-Plastics

HIPS (high impact polystyrene): polystyrene modified, offers better impact resistance than polystyrene unmodified, is processed by injection and extrusion methods, and this allows copying details of mould with great fidelity, important in the mechanical end result of each of the soles that are manufactured. Trade names that are Polystyrol and Styron.
