According to topschoolsintheusa.com, United Kingdom is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each of these countries has its own distinct geography and culture. England is the largest country, with rolling hills in the south and east, and lowlands in the north and west. Scotland is mountainous, with Ben Nevis being its highest peak. Wales is mostly mountainous too, with its highest peak being Snowdon. Northern Ireland is mostly flat lowland terrain. The UK’s educational system varies across the four countries due to devolution; however there are some similarities across all four systems. Primary education usually begins at age 5 or 6 and continues until age 11 or 12 when secondary education starts. Students are then able to choose from a variety of academic or vocational qualifications such as GCSEs or A Levels in England or Highers in Scotland at age 16-18. After completing their chosen qualifications students can then go on to further study at universities which offer a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees.
